Windows and Birds: An Invisible Problem
We tend to think of windows as transparent. Birds don't. To a bird, a window can appear to be open sky, a continuation of the landscape, or a reflection of nearby trees and habitat. As a result, birds may attempt to fly through what looks like open space, leading to collisions that can cause injury or death. In fact, window strikes are one of the leading human-related causes of bird mortality. While large buildings often receive the most attention, residential homes account for a significant number of these collisions each year. The good news? Small changes can make a meaningful difference.
Why Birds Collide With Windows
Birds experience the world differently than humans. They don't always recognize glass as a solid barrier. Instead, they may see:
- Reflections of trees, shrubs, and gardens
- Reflections of the sky
- Visual pathways through transparent corners or opposite windows
- Light and habitat beyond the glass
When these reflections appear uninterrupted, birds can mistake them for safe flight paths.
A Simple Solution: Break Up the Reflection
One of the most effective ways to reduce window strikes is to make the glass more visible. Bird deflectors work by interrupting large reflective surfaces and creating visual markers that help birds recognize a window as a barrier rather than open habitat. Our new Bird Deflectors use UV-reflective technology that is visible to most birds but subtle to the human eye. The result is a bird-friendly solution that helps preserve the views and natural light you love.
Why Exterior Placement Matters
When it comes to bird safety, where you place a bird deflector is just as important as the design itself. Reflections occur on the outside surface of the glass. That's why bird deflectors should always be installed on the exterior of the window. Applying them to the inside can significantly reduce their effectiveness. For best results, place bird deflectors approximately 2–4 inches apart across the problem area. Closer spacing creates a stronger visual signal and helps break up reflections more effectively.

Easy to Apply
Our Bird Deflectors feature a static-cling design that requires no adhesives.
To install:
- Clean the exterior glass thoroughly.
- Generously spray the glass with water.
- Peel the bird deflector from the backing sheet.
- Place the side that was against the backing onto the glass.
- Position as desired.
- Smooth into place using a squeegee or application card.
The UV-reflective coating naturally fades over time with sun exposure and weather. For continued effectiveness, we recommend replacing bird deflectors approximately every six months.

Small Changes, Meaningful Impact
Creating a bird-friendly home doesn't require replacing your windows or sacrificing your view. A thoughtfully placed pattern of bird deflectors can help make glass easier for birds to recognize, reducing the risk of collisions while maintaining the light, openness, and beauty of your space. Sometimes the smallest details can make the biggest difference.
